Geography of Abadan

Abadan, Iran, a city in Khuzestan province, about 410 miles (660 km) south-southwest of Tehran. It is on an island in the Shatt al Arab river, near the head of the Persian Gulf. Abadan is a port for petroleum and gas, and the terminus of pipelines from nearby oil fields. For centuries an unimportant village, Abadan became prominent after oil was discovered nearby in 1908. The city was severely damaged in 1980 during a war between Iran and Iraq.
