Granada, Spain, the capital city of the province of Granada. It is on the Genil River, 225 miles (362 km) south of Madrid. This industrial city was once a cultural and trade center of the Moors. Their magnificent Alhambra stands on one of the city's hills.

Granada was capital of the Moorish kingdom of Granada. It was the last Moorish stronghold in Spain; the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella entered the city on January 2, 1492. Granada declined after the Moriscos (Moors who accepted Christianity) were expelled in 1609.
