Delft, Netherlands, a city in the province of Zuid (South) Holland. It is eight miles (13 km) northwest of Rotterdam and five miles (8 km) southeast of The Hague. Faïence pottery and ornamental tiles produced here are known as delftware. Delftware, with its blue and white or polychrome decorations, was first manufactured during the 17th century in imitation of Oriental porcelains.
