Geography of Arnhem

Arnhem, Netherlands, a river port and the capital of Gelderland province. It lies on the Neder Rijn River, a branch of the Rhine, about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Amsterdam. Arnhem's products include steam engines, textiles, ships, beer, and iron, tin, and copper goods. The city has many beautiful parks and gardens. Its National Open Air Museum, covering 72 acres (29 hectares), is devoted to Dutch rural life of the past.

Arnhem was founded sometime before 900. It was granted a charter in 1233 and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1443. At various times it was held by Spain, France, and Prussia. In 1944, during World War II, the city was the scene of a battle in which Allied forces were severely defeated in an attempt to cross the Rhine.
