Geography of Nijmegen

Nijmegen, (also Nimeguen, and Nimwegen, the Netherlands, a city in Gelderland province. It is on the Waal River (a branch of the Rhine), 10 miles (16 km) south of Arnhem, near the German border. Nijmegen is a rail junction, and produces ceramics, handicrafts, shoes, plastics, and electrical goods. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, it has the ruins of a castle built in the eighth century by Charlemagne, and other structures dating from medieval times. The town was chartered in 1184, and later became a member of the Hanseatic League. Buildings badly damaged in World War II have been restored.
