Matanzas

Matanzas, Cuba, the capital of Matanzas province. It is a seaport 50 miles (80 km) east of Havana, on the Yumurí and San Juan rivers. Sugar, rope, and rayon are produced. Nearby are the Bellamar Caves, Varadero Beach, and Monserrate Hermitage (above the scenic Yumurí valley). Matanzas was founded in 1693.
