Mayaguez

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, a city and seaport. It is 71 miles (114 km) west-southwest of San Juan. Sugarcane, tobacco, and other farm products are processed, and much handworked embroidery is done. The University of Puerto Rico's schools of agriculture and engineering are here. Mayagüez was ravaged by earthquake, tidal wave, and fire in 1918.
