Geography of Bakersfield

Bakersfield, California, the seat of Kern County. It is on the Kern River at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Bakersfield is a commercial and industrial center in a rich mining and agricultural area that produces petroleum, natural gas, livestock, and cotton, wine grapes, and other crops. California State College at Bakersfield is there.

Bakersfield was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1873. Gold was discovered nearby in 1885, oil in 1899.
