Geography of Alamogordo

Alamogordo, New Mexico, the seat of Otero County. It is about 160 miles (260 km) south-southeast of Albuquerque, in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains. Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Base, which are nearby, contribute heavily to the city's economy. Attractions in and near Alamogordo include White Sands National Monument, the Space Center-International Space Hall of Fame, and Trinity Site, where in 1945 the United States exploded its first atomic bomb. Alamogordo was founded in 1898.
