Geography of Charlottesville
Charlottesville, Virginia, the seat of Albemarle County. Founded in 1762, Charlottesville lies in eastern Virginia, in the gently rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The surrounding agricultural area is noted for growing fruit, particularly apples and peaches; dairying; and raising thoroughbred horses. Although Charlottesville has some light manufacturing, it is mainly a residential and university city. The University of Virginia, founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson, is here. Nearby are the former estates of Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe; Shenandoah National Park; and Luray, Shenandoah, and Skyline caverns.
