Geography of Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a city in Anderson County, 22 miles (35 km) northwest of Knoxville. It was founded by an act of Congress in 1942, and under conditions of wartime secrecy several large plants and laboratories devoted to nuclear research and production of the atomic bomb were established. The American Museum of Science and Energy has exhibits on various kinds of energy technology, especially that involving the production of nuclear energy. Oak Ridge was incorporated as a city in 1959.
