Geography of Sherbrooke
Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, the seat of Sherbrooke County. It is in southern Quebec at the junction of the Magog and St. Francis rivers, about 85 miles (137 km) east of Montreal. Sherbrooke is a commercial center and an industrial city, producing textiles, machinery, processed foods, clothing, and rubber products. The University of Sherbrooke, founded in 1954, is here. Near the city are extensive facilities for skiing and other winter sports.
Sherbrooke was founded in 1794 by Gilbert Hyatt, a Loyalist from Vermont, and was first called Hyatt's Mills. The name was later changed in honor of Sir John Sherbrooke, who was governor general of Canada, 1816–18. Sherbrooke was incorporated as a city in 1875. In 2002, several neighboring municipalities became a part of the city of Sherbrooke.
