Geography of Shawinigan
Shawinigan,Quebec, Canada, a city in St. Maurice County. It is on the St. Maurice River about 85 miles (137 km) northeast of Montreal. Shawinigan is an important industrial center producing aluminum, chemicals, paper, wood pulp, textiles, and clothing. The city was founded in the late 1890's after a hydroelectric plant was built on the river. Industries were attracted by the abundant power supply. In 2002 the city was enlarged by a merger with six other communities.
