Alma, a Ukranian river. It was the scene of the first battle of the Crimean War. The Alma flows from the Crimean Mountains about 45 miles (72 km) into the Black Sea. Along its lower course the allied armies of Britain, France, and Turkey defeated Russian forces on September 20, 1854.
