The Mersey River

Mersey River, a river of western England. It begins at the junction of the Tame and Goyt rivers, just south of Manchester, and flows 70 miles (113 km) westward to the Irish Sea. Part of the river is canalized and forms a section of the Manchester Ship Canal. The lower course is a deep estuary. At its mouth are Liverpool, Birkenhead, and Wallasey, with extensive port facilities. Several tunnels under the river link Liverpool and Birkenhead.
