Low Countries

Low Countries, an area of northwestern Europe consisting of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. To the north the low plains of Belgium and the Netherlands border the North Sea. In places, the land is below sea level, making dikes necessary. In the extreme south the land rises to form part of the Ardennes Plateau.
