Brenner Pass
Brenner Pass, the lowest pass in the main chain of the Alps—4,508 feet (1,374 m) at the summit. It connects Italy and Austria and is named for the former Austrian village of Brenner, now Brénnero, Italy. The Brenner route has been in use since Roman times. In 1772 a carriage road was built through the pass, and in 1867 a railway was constructed. A modern expressway was opened in 1969.
