Moravia
Moravia, (Czech: Morava, German: Mähren, mâ′ren), the eastern geographical region of the Czech Republic. It is bordered by Bohemia (the republic's western region), Poland, Slovakia, and Austria. Moravia covers some 8,000 square miles (21,000 km2).
Moravia formed the core of a Slavic kingdom after 800 A.D., but was overrun by Magyars in 906. In 1029 it fell to Bohemia (a part of the Holy Roman Empire), and, in 1526, along with Bohemia, passed to Austria. Moravia became an Austrian crown land in 1849, and a part of newly formed Czechoslovakia in 1918. Its border areas were annexed by Germany after the Munich Conference of 1938. Germany held all Moravia from 1939 until late in World War II. Moravia became part of the Czech Republic when Czechoslovakia split into two nations in 1993.
