Stromboli
Stromboli, an active volcano and small island in the Lipari, or Aeolian, group off the coast of Sicily. The volcano, which is almost perfectly cone-shaped, rises abruptly from the Mediterranean Sea to a height of slightly more than 3,000 feet (900 m). Stromboli has been continuously active for more than 2,000 years. Because of its regular eruptions and their accompanying red glow the volcano is known as “the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.”
