Gotland
Gotland, Sweden, the largest island in the Baltic Sea. It lies 50 miles (80 km) east of the mainland. The island is 75 miles (120 km) long and up to 30 miles (48 km) wide and has an area of 1,167 square miles (3,023 km2). Gotland and several small islands form the county of Gotland.
The island has a mild climate. The chief city is Visby, a picturesque medieval town, once a leading center of the Hanseatic League. Gotland has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and is much studied by archeologists.
