The Channel Islands

Channel Islands, British dependencies in the English Channel, just off the northwest coast of France. The four main islands—Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark—and the many smaller ones making up the group have a total area of 75 square miles (194 km2). Economic activities include dairying, the cultivation of tomatoes and potatoes, and tourism. St. Helier is Jersey's administrative center; St. Peter Port, on Guernsey, is the administrative center of the other islands. Since the 11th century the Channel Islands have been under English rule, except during World War II, when they were occupied by the Germans.

Population: 145,821.
