Corfu
Corfu,(modern Greek: Kérkira,ancient name: Corcyra), a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, about 200 miles (320 km) northwest of Athens. It is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands. Corfu is about 35 miles (56 km) long and 3 to 17 miles (5 to 27 km) wide; its area is 230 square miles (596 km2). It has a mild, rainy climate, and its fertile land produces olives, oranges, and grapes. The island's population was 97,102 in 1981. The island's capital, also called Corfu, had a population of 36,901.
