Lesbos
Lesbos, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea off the western coast of Asia Minor. It was settled in ancient times by Aeolian Greeks, and by 700 B.C. was a center of wealth and culture. Its major city, Mytilene, was the home of the poets Sappho and Alcaeus. Lesbos became part of the Athenian empire in the fifth century B.C. A revolt against Athens was crushed in 427 and the land divided among Athenians.
