Geography of Zaporozhye
Zaporozhye, Ukraine, a city in the southeastern part of the country. The name of the city, which is situated on the Dnieper River, means “beyond the rapids.” It is the site of the Dneproges Dam, which supplies hydroelectric power for the city's large chemical, steel, and machinery industries. Zaporozhye is a river port and rail center. Zaporozhye State University and several technical schools are here.
Zaporozhye was founded as Aleksandrov in 1770 on the site of a Cossack camp. It was renamed Zaporozhye in 1921.
