Geography of Donetsk

Donetsk, Ukraine, a city on the Kalmius River about 370 miles (595 km) southeast of Kiev. Donetsk serves as the industrial center of the Donets Basin Ukraine's principal coal-mining region. Emphasis is on heavy industry, chiefly iron and steel, machinery, and chemicals. Donetsk has a state university, a medical institute and several research institutes. The city also has a symphony orchestra.

Donetsk was founded about 1870 as Yuzovka. The city developed into an important steelmaking center. It was renamed Stalino in 1924. The city was heavily damaged during World War II. Stalino was renamed Donetsk in 1961.
