Kingston

Kingston, Jamaica, the capital of the nation. Kingston has an excellent harbor. The city processes and exports coffee, sugarcane, rum, coconuts, and bananas. It also has a great variety of industries and is a popular vacation resort.

Kingston was founded in 1692 to replace nearby Port Royal, which had been destroyed by an earthquake. In the 18th century, Kingston was a flourishing market town for sugar and rum and also for the slave trade. In 1872 Kingston became Jamaica's capital.
