The Yamuna River

Yamuna (or Jumna)River, a river of northern India. It is the longest tributary of the Ganges River, having a length of about 860 miles (1,380 km). The source of the Yamuna is in the western Himalayas. It first flows south and then southeast, running parallel to and just west of the Ganges. It passes by Delhi and Agra, and empties into the Ganges at Allahabad. Hindus consider the point where the rivers meet to be sacred.

The Yamuna is navigable for small boats and barges. During the hot season the river dwindles to a small stream, partly due to evaporation and partly because water is drawn off by irrigation canals.
