The Songhua River
Songhua Jiang, or Sung-hua Chiang, both (also Sungari River), a river in northeastern China, draining much of Manchuria. From its source in the Changbai Shan, a mountain range on the Korean border, the river flows northwestward to receive its principal tributary, the Nen, near Fuyu. It then turns east-northeast, emptying into the Amur River at the Russian-Chinese border. The Songhua, navigable for much of its 1,150-mile (1,805-km) length, is a major trade artery for Manchuria's rich agricultural region. Harbin is the chief port. A dam near Jilin provides hydroelectric power and impounds a large reservoir.
