The Salween River
Salween River, a river of southeastern Asia. It begins on the plateau of Tibet and flows generally southward through China and Burma, emptying into the Gulf of Martaban, an arm of the Andaman Sea. Much of the Salween's 1,750-mile (2,816-km) course is marked by deep gorges and rapids. Commercial navigation is limited to a short section near the mouth around Moulmein, the only major city on the river. The Salween's hydroelectric potential is slowly being developed.
