Geography of Sakai
Sakai, Japan, a city in Osaka prefecture in southern Honshu. It lies on Osaka Bay, separated from the city of Osaka by the Yamato River. Sakai is a port and industrial center, producing iron, steel, machinery, and chemicals. From the 1460's until the mid-1600's it was a major trading port. Then foreign trade was banned, and the city began to decline. When trade was reopened in the 1850's, Sakai was eclipsed by Osaka and failed to regain its former importance. Since World War II, however, it has become one of Osaka's most industrialized suburbs.
Population: 792,034.
