Madura
Madura, Indonesia, one of the Greater Sunda Islands. It lies along the eastern coast of Java in the Java Sea. Madura has an approximate area of 2,000 square miles (5,180 km2) and is about 22 miles (35 km) long and about 99 miles (160 km) wide. Madura has a tropical climate with temperatures averaging between 75° and 95° F. (20° and 30° C.). Salt production, fishing, and cattle raising are the principal industries.
Madura is very densely populated. The total population of Madura and the larger neighboring island of Java in 1993 was 112,158,200. The capital of Madura is Pamekasan.
