Geography of Palembang
Palembang, Indonesia, a city on Sumatra, and capital of South Sumatra Province. It lies 260 miles (420 km) northwest of Jakarta, on the Musi River. Though 55 miles (88 km) inland, Palembang handles seagoing traffic. Its refineries and docks serve rich oilfields. Its port handles petroleum products, timber products, rubber, coffee, and spices. Palembang was once the capital of a vast Buddhist empire called Sri Vijaya that was at its peak in the eighth century.
