Geography of Ujung Pandang

Ujung Pandang, Indonesia, the capital of South Sulawesi province, on Celebes island. It was formerly called Makassar. It is a port on the Makassar Strait, about 500 miles (800 km) east-northeast of Surabaya, Java. Coffee, copra, and spices are exported. Hasanuddin University is here. The Dutch controlled Ujung Pandang from 1668 until 1950, except during World War II when Indonesia was occupied by the Japanese.
