Geography of Durban
Durban, Republic of South Africa, the largest city in KwaZulu/Natal Province and the nation's principal seaport. It is on the Indian Ocean at the north shore of Natal Bay and is a major winter resort. The business section lies north of the port, and the residential section occupies a range of low hills. Soap, paint, textiles, clothing, chemicals, tires, machinery, and food products are manufactured. Durban also has railway shops. Part of the University of Natal is here.
Durban was founded in 1835. Its prosperity was increased by the Natal gold strikes of 1884–86.
