Geography of Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein, South Africa, the capital of Free State. It is sometimes called the nation's judicial capital because it is the seat of the Supreme Court. The city lies on the Highveld, a grassy upland, at an elevation of about 4,600 feet (1,400 m). It is 230 miles (370 km) southwest of Johannesburg.

Bloemfontein has light manufacturing industries and is a regional distribution center for industrial and agricultural products. The University of the Orange Free State is here. The city was founded in 1846 and made the capital in 1854.
