Geography of Abuja
Abuja, Nigeria, the nation's capital. It is in the Federal Capital Territory, near the center of the country. In 1976 Abuja, then a small town, was designated as the site for a new capital, to replace Lagos. Major construction projects began in Abuja in the early 1980's but many have remained unfinished. The capital was officially transferred from Lagos to Abuja in 1991.
