Welwitschia
Welwitschia, a desert plant of southwestern Africa. The welwitschia has a woody stem less than 12 inches (30 cm) high but up to more than 12 feet (3.7 m) in circumference. The plant produces only two leaves, one from each side of the trunk, which continue to grow as long as the plant lives—up to a century or more. The leaves are extremely broad and split into wide ribbons as they age. Branching heads of male and female cones grow between the leaves and trunk. The female cones turn red when they mature.
The welwitschia is Welwitschia mirabilis of the family Gnetaceae.
