Pokeweed
Pokeweed, a tall, strong-smelling herb of eastern North America. It is also called pokeberry, pigeonberry, and scoke. The plant grows mainly in wet places and is a common weed on newly cleared land. Pokeweed has oblong or oval red-veined leaves on purplish stems and spikes of tiny white flowers. The bluish-black berries are not edible but are used for ornament. Tender shoots of pokeweed make delicious boiled greens, but the root is violently poisonous.
Pokeweed is Phytolacca americana of the pokeweed family, Phytolaccaceae.
Pokeweed has red-veined leaves and inedible purple berries.
