Trumpet Creeper: Identification, Cultivation & Characteristics

Trumpet Creeper

Trumpet Creeper

Trumpet Creeper, the common name for a genus of deciduous, woody vines. There are two species. One is native to North America and is called simply trumpet creeper (or trumpet vine); the other is native to China and Japan, and is called the Chinese trumpet creeper.

The trumpet creepers are tall-growing vines. The American species often reaches a height of 30 feet (9 m). The Chinese species, which does not grow quite as tall, can be cultivated as a pot plant. Trumpet creepers are cultivated for their showy orange or red trumpet-shaped flowers. The flowers can reach a width of two inches (5 cm) in the American species and up to three inches (7.5 cm) in the Chinese.

The trumpet creepers belong to the bignonia family, Bignoniaceae. The American species is Campsis radicans; the Chinese, C. grandiflora.
