Marshmallow
Marshmallow, a perennial herb native to Europe, but introduced in marshy areas in the eastern United States. It is an erect plant three to four feet (90 to 120 cm) high, with oval downy leaves and clusters of bluish or pink flowers. The roots yield a gelatinous substance called mucilage, which was formerly used in marshmallow candy. The mucilage is still used to some extent in making glue and in cough medications.
The marshmallow is Althaea officinalis of the mallow family, Malvaceae.
