Bleeding Heart Plant: Care, Growing & Characteristics

Bleeding Heart

Bleeding Heart

Bleeding Heart, a showy plant bearing flower clusters that droop gracefully. Each blossom resembles a hanging heart. A mature blossom has a spur beneath the heart that somewhat resembles a drop of blood. The common bleeding heart, native to Japan, is often cultivated in gardens. It grows 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm) high and has many fine, deeply cut leaves. The flowers, rose-colored or red, bloom in spring.

Bleeding hearts grow well in the open or in rock gardens. They may also be grown in pots if they are kept in a cool place. The wild bleeding heart, found from New York to Georgia, has pink flowers.

The garden bleeding heart is Dicentra spectabilis: wild, D. eximia. Both are of the family Fumariaceae.
