Arrowroot
Arrowroot, the common name of a family of herbs, most of which are tropical. The family is made up of 25 genera and about 400 species, most of which have thick underground stems. The plant that produces West Indian arrowroot starch belongs to this family.
In the United States, plants of two genera of the arrowroot family are cultivated. They are grown in greenhouses, chiefly for their attractive foliage.
The arrowroot family is Marantaceae. The genera Maranta arundinacea and Calathea are the ones cultivated in the United States.
