Mariposa Lily

Mariposa lilies resemble tulips.

The Mariposa lily varies from 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) in height. Its erect stems and grasslike or fleshy leaves grow from bulb-like roots called corms. The flowers are usually white, yellow, lilac, purple, or reddish. The fruit is a capsule. The plant thrives in sandy, porous, somewhat acid soil. One of the species, the sego lily, is the state flower of Utah.

The sego lily is Calochortus nuttallii. Mariposa lilies belong to the lily family, Liliaceae.
