Sea Lavender: Cultivation, Characteristics & Care

Sea Lavender

Sea Lavender

Sea Lavender, the common name of a group of herbaceous plants found mainly along the seacoasts of the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 300 species. Sea lavenders grow wild in salt marshes, but are also easily grown in flower gardens that have a somewhat sandy soil.

Sea lavenders have clusters of tiny lavender, bluish-lavender, and pale purple flowers with a faintly spicy fragrance. The leaves grow mostly from the base of the plant. The stems are branched. Sea lavenders are widely used in dried winter bouquets since the flowers do not lose color.

Sea lavenders belong to the genus Limonium of the leadwort family, Plumbaginaceae.
