Tulane University
Tulane University of Louisiana, a private, nonsectarian, coeducational university in New Orleans, Louisiana. It consists of 11 graduate and undergraduate schools, such schools of architecture, business administration, continuing education, science and engineering, social work, medical school and Newcomb College (for women). The university also offers study abroad programs and has other special programs in international and comparative law, Latin American studies, and political economy. Tulane's Delta Regional Primate Research Center, 35 miles (56 km) from the main campus, conducts studies related to human health. Specialized libraries include a law library, a medical library, a Latin American studies library, the Hogan Jazz Archive, and the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, which houses rare books and manuscripts.
Tulane was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana. It was part of the University of Louisiana from 1847 until 1884. It was then reorganized as a separate institution and named after its chief financial benefactor, Paul Tulane. Tulane University was closed after Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005. The university reopened in January 2006 and reorganized its academic divisions.
