Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), a university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a nonsectarian, coeducational land-grant institution under private control. M.I.T. is one of the world's leading institutions of technological education. It has schools of engineering, science, architecture and planning, humanities and social sciences, and management, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Facilities include a nuclear reactor, a center for international studies, a nautical museum, and an art gallery.

M.I.T. was chartered in 1861 and opened in 1865.
