Tokyo, University of, a public, coeducational university in Tokyo, Japan. It is Japan's foremost and oldest government-supported university. Among the school's special facilities are an astronomical observatory, a medical center, and an earthquake research center. Its library is one of the largest in the Far East. The university was founded in 1877 by merging three private universities to form Tokyo Imperial University. The present name was adopted after World War II.
