Smith College
Smith College, a privately endowed liberal arts college for women in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is the largest independent women's college in the United States and confers bachelor's, master's, and doctor's degrees. There are about 100 buildings on Smith's 128-acre (52-hectare) main campus. Among these are the Clark Science Center, the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts, and Wright Hall, which has a language laboratory and a social science research center. The School for Social Work has been a leading graduate school in that field since its founding in 1918.
Smith was chartered in 1871 under terms of a bequest by Sophia Smith (1796–1870). Smith opened in 1875 as the first degree-granting women's college not associated with a secondary school.
