London, University of, an educational institution at London, England. The University of London grew out of University College, founded in 1827. It was incorporated by a royal charter in 1836, but only as an examining body for conferring degrees. In 1898 it was reorganized to include teaching, research, and extension work.
The university's schools and colleges include the London School of Economics and Political Science; the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine; Heythrop College; King's College London; the Institute of Education; Queen Mary and Westfield College; University College London; and the medical schools of several hospitals. Also affiliated with the university are various institutes and theological schools.
The University of London has about 75,000 full-time students and 2,100 faculty members.
