C.L. Chennault
Chennault, Claire Lee (1890-1958), a United States army officer. During World War II, he organized and commanded the “Flying Tigers,” a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who helped China fight the Japanese. In 1942 he became commanding general of the U.S. 14th Air Force, in China. Chennault retired in 1945 as a major general.
Chennault was born in Commerce, Texas. He joined the Army Air Service during World War I. He resigned in 1937, and was engaged by Chiang Kai-shek, head of the Nationalist Chinese government, to train Chinese fliers.
